First Open Day in Nairobi Brings UN Families together
(UNIC Nairobi, 11 May 2018) – For the first time ever, the United Nations Office in Nairobi (UNON) opened its doors to staff and family of all UN agencies, Member States and the Host Country for a family fun day where they showcased the work of the UN in Kenya.
The event which was opened by Director-General of UNON, Sahle-Work Zewde had various activities which included entertainment by Mwai Lawrence’s jazz band-The Truth, Food stalls in a carnival-themed “village”, children’s fun area with bouncy castle and face-painting; all those who needed tours of the New Office Facility, the conference area and a bike tour of the complex were offered.
Most of the UN agencies had exhibited their work at the Upper Concourse. The Burundian Drummers entertained the participants throughout the day. All the 17 Sustainable Development Goals posters with localized images were displayed at the main lobby- an initiative advocated and implemented by the UN Information Centre in Nairobi to promote these goals within the complex.
“More than ever before in human history, we share a common destiny. And we can master it only if we face it TOGETHER,” said Director-General Zewde.
“ I thank all those who attended including the refugees with amazing products, our Nairobi team who attended Inter-Agency Games in Italy, soccer team kids from vulnerable areas trained at our recreation centre an initiative of staff and Burundian drums. UN compound is yours!” said the Director-General..
Others speakers who addressed staff were UNEP Executive Director, Erik Solheim, – UN HABITAT Executive Director, Ms. Maimunah Mohd Sharif and Representative of the UN Kenya Resident Coordinator.
The colorful ceremony was concluded by recognition of the UN Inter-Agency (AIG) Sportsmen and women, who came back from the IAG in Italy.
