Commemoration of the 23rd Anniversary of the Genocide in Rwanda at UN Office at NairobiTirus Wainaina
The 23rd Commemoration of the Genocide in Rwanda was held on 07 April 2017 at the United Nations Office at Nairobi. The UN Information Centre, Nairobi organized event was attended by more than 400 students representing 17 different Kenya universities. In attendance also, were members of the Diplomatic community and UN Staff.
The Program of the day began with Prayers followed by the reading of the UN Secretary General’s message and a video highlighting the trials and tribulations of a genocide.
The audience was also fascinated by first-hand accounts of the immediate aftermath of the genocide and the efforts begun to rebuild Rwanda witnessed by Dudu Mbaye – a Staff member of UN HABITAT.
Remarks were made by Deputy Chairperson of Kenya Committee against Genocide, who had been in Rwanda 2 weeks prior. As the last part of the event, students had question and answer session about the true meaning of commemorating the 1994 Genocide in Rwanda and how they can embark on justice and reconciliation process.
