Mission Statement: Helping the world’s refugees is the job of the UNHCR, which was created in 1951. The primary purpose of UNHCR is to safeguard the rights and well being of refugees by promoting the enjoyment of legal and physical security in refugees' countries of asylum and by providing material assistance. UNHCR strives to ensure that everyone can exercise the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another state and to return to home voluntarily.

Agency Activities: UNHCR protects and assists some 200,000 refugees in Kenya and provides assistance to recent returnees and their communities in neighboring Somalia and Sudan. The majority of the refugees in Kenya arrived here since the early '90s and have been accommodated at two sites: Dadaab in northeastern Kenya and Kakuma in the northwestern part of the country.

Agency Coverage: The Nairobi office oversees activities in Kenya and in neighboring Somalia, while regional UNHCR specialists based in Nairobi operate where needed across the African continent.
