25 February 2009 –The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions, Professor Philip Alston has concluded his mission to Kenya with a UNIC-Nairobi organized press conference. Approximately 50 local and international journalists were present, with the proceedings carried live on 3 of the 4 major TV stations.
Professor Alston, in Kenya since 16 February at the invitation of the Government, was discharging his responsibilities as Special Rapporteur to report on alleged killings, their underlying causes, and whether effective legal action to prosecute and punish those responsible was subsequently taken.
He visited :
1. the Rift Valley Province (Nakuru, Eldoret, and Kiambaa),
2. Western Province (Bungoma and Mt Elgon),
3. Nyanza Province (Kisumu),
4. Central Province (Nyeri)
5. and Nairobi.
Professor Alston has met with Government officials at the national, provincial and district levels, as well as survivors of, and witnesses to, killings. He also had an opportunity to meet and listen to academics, the Kenya National Human Rights Commission and representatives of a range of local, national and international civil society groups.
