Nairobi Peace Talks at the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON)Guru Maajabu
The Director-General of the United Nations Office in Nairobi (UNON) Ms. Sahle-Work Zewde today opened the Nairobi Peace Talks held at the UN offices in Gigiri, Nairobi.
UNON in collaboration with a Kenyan NGO, Interpeace co- organizer the event which is a follow up to the Geneva Peace Talks 2015 hosted at the UN Office in Geneva and brought together inspirational speakers doing extraordinary things for peace.
Speaking at the opening of the discussion the Director-General said; “When I hear the term “peace talks”, my first instinct is to think of negotiations among warring parties aimed at finding a peaceful resolution to a violent conflict. And while the issue of peace negotiations will certainly be raised here, these “Nairobi Peace Talks” are not negotiations or peace talks per se, but rather, “talks about peace”, discussions on how to prevent societal tensions from erupting into violence, and reflections on how to strengthen our respective conflict-prevention efforts.”
She said the United Nations was committed to building a culture of prevention and to take early action to defuse tensions and create space for dialogue before conflict erupts.
The Peace talks saw, musicians, leaders of civil society, parliamentarians diplomats and ordinary people exchange experiences in peace buildings.
