25th Commemoration of the International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda “Dubbed kwibuka25” at UN NairobiTirus Wainaina
UN Information Centre Nairobi in collaboration with the Rwanda High Commission organized the 25th Commemoration of the International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda “Dubbed kwibuka25” on Tuesday 09 April 2019 at UN headquarters in Nairobi (UNON). The event brought together in more than 1200 participants who included students from 15 local universities, members of the diplomatic community, Kenya government representatives and Rwanda community living in Kenya.

UNON acting Director-General, Ms. Maimunah Mohd Sharif welcomed the guests asking for the one-minute silence before she presented the UN Secretary-General message. Others who spoke to the gathering were the Rwanda High Commissioner, H.E. Dr. Richard Masozera and Senator Hon. Ledama Olekina and Ambassador Ben Ogutu who represented the Kenya Government.
A moment of remembrance was observed and 8 candles light by representatives from the UN, Kenya Government and Rwanda High Commission.
During the interactive session in the second session where more than 700 students attended, a short video entitled “Kwibuka25; Remember-Unite-Renew” was screened. The High Commissioner of Rwanda was joined by social scientist from UNESCO, Dr. Abdul Lamin in fielding questions from the students. The discussion generated heated and lively conversation as the students raised pertinent questions and observations. The session which proved both informative and educational was much appreciated by students who are mainly students of Human Rights.
