UNIC visits schools in tour of Rift Valley

Wednesday, 2 April 2003--As part of its outreach Programme, the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) addressed students from 80 schools during a one-week visit in the Rift Valley Province that began on 24 March.

UNIC National Information Officer Irene Mwakesi visited seven districts in the province where she talked to both primary and secondary school students on the aims, goals and role of the United Nations as well UN activities in Kenya.

The sessions included questions and answers and video screening. The currently popular video "The Silent Epidemic", a sobering documentary that educates the public on the consequences of STDs and HIV/AIDS, was shown. The students showed a lot of interest in the situation in Iraq.

The school outreach Programme is supported by Kenya's Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and provincial and district education officers. The Programme started in 1995 with visits to schools in Nairobi, Coast, Nyanza, Western and Eastern provinces
