RELEASE IN SOMALIA OF KIDNAPPED CONSULTANTS

COORDINATION OF INTERNATIONAL SUPPORT TO SOMALIS (CISS)

On behalf of the International Community: Donors, UN agencies and NGOs, the CISS Executive Committee expresses its relief following the release of the two CARE consultants who were part of a team hired to assess the feasibility of constructing two jetties in Puntland.  We thank all those involved in securing their safe release.

Efforts by the authorities, local elders and civil society have made this positive outcome possible, with the two men released unharmed and soon to be reunited with their families.

The international community, which remains committed to serving the needs of the Somali people, will continue to dialogue with all stakeholders to make sure appropriate measures are in place so that this unacceptable situation not to repeat itself and provide a conducive environment for the continuation of aid Programmes in the area.

Statement by Eric Laroche, UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia
