Mission Statement: Founded in 1945, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has the mandate to raise levels of nutrition and standards of living, to improve agricultural productivity (including fisheries and forestry) and to better the condition of rural populations.

Agency Activities: Practical help to developing countries through a wide range of technical assistance projects; collection, analysis and dissemination of information on food agriculture, forestry and fisheries; independent advice to governments on policies and legal structures needed for development; a neutral forum where all nations can discuss and formulate policy on major food and agriculture issues.

Agency Coverage: FAO is an intergovernmental organization with 175 member nations and a member organization, the European Community. The FAO office in Nairobi covers Kenya and Somali, emergency coordination activities in Southern Sudan and the Great Lakes countries.
