About UNIC
Introduction to UNIC Nairobi
The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Nairobi is located in the United Nations complex in Gigiri, Nairobi, Kenya, which is the home of 24 United Nations agencies and Programmes, including the headquarters of two global Programmes - the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlement Programme (UN-HABITAT). The offices are grouped together as UNON -- the United Nations Office at Nairobi.
What we do
The network of United Nations Information Centres (UNICs) links UN Headquarters with people around the world. Located in 63 countries, these offices bring global United Nations messages, adapted to the local context and communicated in local languages, to their local constituencies.
UNICs promote key United Nations priorities through local media, work in partnership with civil society and NGOs, and reach out to the grassroots level of society. UNIC in Nairobi serves Kenya, Uganda and the Seychelles.
UNIC Nairobi operates as a single point of public information and media relations for the UN on global, regional and local levels. Its core work involves keeping Kenya and neighbouring countries informed of developments within the United Nations system, as well as relaying region-specific information from local agencies to governments, partner organizations and the world's media. For dozens of smaller UN offices and Programmes based in Nairobi, UNIC Nairobi offers advice and support in designing information strategies and disseminating timely information to the press and public. Through its weekly UN Gazeti newsletter, it also relays breaking news on landmark gatherings in Nairobi and important regional agreements to the media and opinion leaders around Africa.
UNIC Nairobi is responsible for leading the identification and celebration of major UN anniversaries and commemorative days: The International Day of Peace, Human Rights Day, International Women's Day, and others including high-level symposiums and debates, art exhibitions, book launches and colourful charity events. It also supports Model UN Day; an annual gathering of students from around the region who perform wide-ranging role-plays of the UN General Assembly and Security Council in a novel way to promote understanding of the UN's work. On UN Day each October, UNIC Nairobi also stages a unique celebration to honour the UN in Kenya Person of the Year a title that has attracted its own laurels for promoting an inspiring range of role models for a younger generation of Kenyans.
