2007 - 6th Kenya Model United NationsThe Kenya Model United Nations held its 6th Annual Conference from the 27th of February to 2nd of March, 2007 at the United Nations Gigiri. In participation were 13 different chapters (universities in Kenya) with around 620 delegates. The theme of this year’s conference was “The Role of the Youth in Developing Countries” with various committees that were set up to tackle various issues such as:
At the end of the conference, each committee was expected to come up with a draft resolution which was later presented to the General Assembly. The final resolution if adopted by the general assembly shall be forwarded to the UNIC. Also included in the committees are the Security Council and International Court of Justice each having different proceedings which are carried out throughout the duration of the conference. The first day of the conference was graced by the Kenya’s P.S. of planning and national development Dr. Edward Sambili who gave an address to the delegates of the conference. His address was focused on the youth and the need for them to proactively interact in not only bettering their lives but that of their communities. The other guest speaker was Mr.Nasser Ega Mussa,The deputy head of UNIC and past secretary generals of Kenya model United Nations. UNIC has greatly helped in the facilitation of the conference. On the second day we were humbled by the presence of special guest speakers Mr. Leonard Blazeby, from International Committee of the Red Cross who addressed the committee of peace and conflict resolution and Paul Oyier, the C.E.O of Sterling quality Entertainment who addressed the committee of youth and employment/ I.C.T and education and Dr.Oketch Owiti,The dean,University of Nairobi School of law who addressed the Education and ICT committee. The conference came to an end on Friday 2nd March with a closing address by Mr Eric Falt, Director UNIC Nairobi.
