Five Kenyan Universities participate in the 3rd Kenyan Model United Nations

29 May, 2004 -- More than 200 students from five local universities are participating in the annual Kenya Model United Nations conference in Nairobi 25-28 May. The five universities include Nairobi, Kenyatta, Moi, Strathmore and the Nairobi-based United States International University.

The conference was officially opened by the United Nations Resident Coordinator, Mr. Paul Andre de la Porte. In his opening remarks, Mr. de la Porte said that in a world that has become interconnected through commerce and communication, the United Nations is the only global political body for both dialogue and action. “Nearly every country is represented in the United Nations, and each has the right to speak out on issues of peace and development, looking for common solutions to shared problems,” he said.

The United Nations represents a global society where member states chose to work together in solving their problems rather than to face them alone, he added. "With each passing year, we become more and more aware that cooperation among countries is the future of this planet."

The Kenya Model United Nations vice president, Ms. Sylvia Wanjau, said the theme of this year’s conference is sovereignty, peace and justice. She noted that justice is still yet to be achieved and called on the delegates to base their deliberation on the need for justice. The Model United Nations is a simulation of the UN General Assembly.
